John Ray Grisham Jr. (born February 8, 1955) is a former politician, retired attorney, American novelist and author best known for his works of modern legal drama.
A Time to Kill is the name of a legal suspense thriller authored by John Grisham in 1989. Grisham's first novel, it was rejected by many publishers before Wynwood Press eventually gave it a modest 5,000-copy printing. After The Firm, The Pelican Brief, and The Client became bestsellers, interest in A Time to Kill grew, the book was republished by Doubleday in hardcover and then by Dell Publishing in paperback, and became a bestseller as well.
The Firm is a 1991 legal thriller and the second novel by John Grisham. It was his first widely recognized piece of work, and in 1993, was made into a film starring Tom Cruise. Grisham's first novel, A Time to Kill, was successful but did not bring the author the attention of the general public.
The Pelican Brief is a legal/suspense thriller written by John Grisham in 1992. The hardcover edition (ISBN 0-385-42198-2) was published by Doubleday in that same year. Two paperback editions were published, both by Dell Publishing and both in 1993.
The Client (1994) is a legal thriller written by American author John Grisham, set mostly in Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans, Louisiana. It is a mix with various legal elements and suspense. The 1994 film -based on the novel was directed by Joel Schumacher and starred Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Renfro. The film was released on July 20, 1994. For her work in the film, Susan Sarandon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
The film was so successful that it spawned a TV series of the same name, starring JoBeth Williams and John Heard. However, the TV version lasted only one season (1995-1996).
The Chamber (1994) is a legal/suspense novel by noted American author John Grisham. It features a discussion about capital punishment. Set around the Mississippi State Penitentiary, it is the story of an old man and former Klansman named Sam Cayhall who is convicted of murder and sentenced to death by gas chamber twenty years after his bombing of a Jewish lawyer's office.
The Rainmaker is a 1995 novel by John Grisham. It was turned into a film in 1997.
The Runaway Jury is a legal thriller novel written by American author John Grisham. The hardcover first edition was published by Doubleday Books in 1996 (ISBN 0-385-47294-3). Pearson ESL released the paperback edition in 2001 (ISBN 0-582-43405-X). The novel was published again in 2003 to coincide with the release of Runaway Jury, a movie adaptation of the novel. The third printing (ISBN 0-440-22147-1) bears a movie-themed cover, in place of the covers used on the first and second printings. In 2003, it was made into a film starring John Cusack, Rachel Weisz and Gene Hackman.
The Partner (1997) is a legal/thriller novel by noted American author John Grisham.
Patrick S Lanigan, a junior partner in a law firm in Biloxi, Mississippi, gets wind of a scheme to defraud the US Government over a ship-building overcharging scheme. His firm is deeply involved in the scam, and they're planning to keep him out of it. He bides his time, secretly collecting evidence and then disappears. A body is later found, identified as his burned in a car crash and is buried under his name. Six weeks later, $90 million vanishes from the law firm's off-shore bank account, and he is suspected. The search is on.
Four years later, he is discovered living a new life in a small town in Brazil. He is kidnapped and tortured to reveal the location of the money. Before he can reveal it,
